Karyotype Test Karyotype test and chromosomes assessment traditionally performed using Peripheral blood cell culture, as in this technique, chromosomes are simply available. A karyotype test evaluates the size, shape, and the count of your chromosomes. Preparation Karyotype Test? Do not use any antibiotics 5-7 day before sampling. If you took drugs before sampling, you must inform the Lab technician, as those medications might have negative effect on your test result. Do not use any corticosteroids drug like; betamethasone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone and prednisolone, 1 month before sampling. It is necessary that you did not have any bone marrow transplant, kidney transplant, chemotherapy, thalassemia major and blood transfusion. Fasting is not necessary. In the case of cell culture failure, your blood sampling must be repeated. In some uncertain cases, additional tests will be necessary to confirm the final result. Karyotype Result: One normal human cell has 46 chromosomes in other words it has 23 chromosome pair that which of pair is inherited paternally and the other is maternally inherited. As you may know 22 chromosome pairs are classified according to the size and shape, and they are the same in both sexes. The 23th pair is sexual chromosomes. Normally women have two X chromosome and men have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. More or less than 46 chromosomes and/or abnormal shape or size of chromosomes may recommend chromosome abnormality. As in such cases cytogenetic specialists will ask for karyotype test to diagnose possible abnormalities and take the necessary measures to solve this.
